Stratus Clouds

A stratus cloud is a uniform, flat, gray layer of cloud cover that develops horizontally as opposed to the vertically developed cumulus cloud. Prolonged periods of light precipitation or drizzle are often accompanied by stratus clouds. If you see stratus clouds overhead, you can usually expect the weather to remain dismal for the next several hours at least. Stratus clouds are often associated with the approach of a warm front.
