Cumulonimbus clouds are often referred to as thunderheads. Not all cumulonimbus clouds generate thunder and lightning however all of them generate precipitation. Hail can also develop in cumulonimbus clouds. Cumulonimbus clouds develop from cumulus clouds. They are formed in a variety of different weather situations. Electrification frequently occurs in cumulonimbus clouds which is responsible for thunder and lightning, a topic which will be expanded upon when we cover thunderstorms in much more detail.
