Have you ever seen the sun or moon have a very milky appearance? You were probably looking at the sun or moon through a layer of altostratus clouds. These clouds are strato type clouds occurring at the middle level. They quite frequently indicate the approach of a warm front and they will often thicken into stratus and then eventually nimbostratus clouds which will bring rain or snow.
