Interview with John Morris
Assistant Dean

Ucompass: Who are the typical faculty using Ucompass technology at AMU?

John Morris: AMU has over 150 distinguished adjunct faculty members located throughout the 50 states and in 30 foreign countries. Many have PhDs and are subject matter experts and authors in the fields they teach. They include professors who teach at other universities, United Nations officials, retired senior military officers, government officials and corporate executives.

Ucompass: Provide a profile of a typical online student at AMU

John Morris: AMU has over 3,500 adult continuing education learners who earn graduate and undergraduate degrees online through the Educator state-of-the-art electronic classroom. Over 70% are active and reserve members of the armed services while others are non-military professionals who hold full time positions. Students enroll at AMU primarily because it provides a flexible opportunity to accomplish their academic goals while meeting the demands of their professional schedules.

Ucompass: How has Ucompass technology been instrumental in the success of your online teaching efforts and your students' online learning efforts?

John Morris: Educator delivered an online learning and teaching experience for students and professors that far surpassed the previous electronic classroom. It received an overwhelmingly positive response because it empowered students and faculty with an enhanced capability to learn and teach in a highly interactive online environment. The Educator system exceeded AMU's expectations and provides a wireless and streaming video capability to meet future student learning demands.

Ucompass: Give an example of an innovative use of Ucompass technology

John Morris: Educator has provided AMU with the technology to evaluate, critique and teach at a distance. Its technology now allows AMU to administer online-proctored exams, receive student critiques and facilitate study group and peer review learning activities.
